You can use the Service Management framework to add items to open at login (though they don't appear in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items, which is a pet peeve of mine). See this answer on SO:

I don't know of an alternate way to add items to the Finder's sidebar, though.

I'm still using LSSharedFileList even though it's deprecated.
